What time is it? That can be a confusing question in our class!
Above one of the bulletin boards in our classroom are four clocks. The biggest clock shows our Ottawa time. The three other clocks show what time it is in other parts of the world. At the moment, they are showing the time in Picture Butte (Alberta, Canada), Bangkok (Thailand) and Adelaide (Australia). These places have classrooms that we have made contact with. We plan to change the clocks every month or so as we make contact with other classes.
We also plan to add classes who communicate with us to our world map. Here’s what the map is looking like at the moment:

Hi Mr Toft,
Why do you need 4 clocks in your class?
September 14th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
@Leigh, I guess we don’t need four clocks at all. I mean, do we even need one? The school bells and teachers tell us what time it is anyway!
But that doesn’t answer your question, does it?
I put four clocks in the room to help my students understand how time zones work and to realize that they are communicating with people from all over the world.

Mr Toft,
What an excellent idea. Such a visual representation of where you are connecting to students around the world.
Also, well done to your students for their introductions about themselves. They made very interesting reading. They might like to check out the participants list and connect with someone else who has similar interests.

Hi Mr. Toft!
That is really neat that you have hung the different clocks with the different times. With my family living in Ontario, it makes it quite difficult to chat sometimes because of the time difference. I think it’s kind of neat that I am already ahead of “their” time. It feels a little like time travel in a way. Skyping can be challenging, too, because in order for me to Skype with my family, I have to do it early morning (before school starts which is 7:20am) or late at night after my bedtime (which is 9:30)!

Pretty cool that you have four clocks in your room. It sounds like a good idea, especially since you communicate with other classrooms in different time zones.

I like the ideas of the different clocks in your room. I may just have to “borrow” it. I use my ipod touch to identify times around the world. It really helps when I am talking to people in Australia and New Zealand. I really like your blog.

@wmchamberlain, Borrow away! I think I “borrowed” this idea from Chris Betcher (http://betch.edublogs.org/) if memory serves me correct.
I got my clocks quite cheaply from IKEA. I’ve noticed that my local dollar stores now sell them as well.
Are your students actively using ipod touches in your class?

In our class we have three clocks. Only one clock is right.
One clock tells what time we get out.All the time
I hope you can comment back at Mr. Barrett’s blog.

@Britni, I agree. This is all very cool. If you look at your comment it says it was published at 4:32 pm even though you wrote it at 2:30.

@Justine W (from Mr.Barrett class), I guess that one clock is stuck on the time that it is time to leave? What does the third clock show?

Dear Mr. Toft,
You and I are on the same page on this one! We have the map set up, but I’m buying the clocks now, too!
:-) Love it!
Thanks for sharing such a fabulous idea!

Hi there!
We are a 5th grade class from the USA.
The clocks were really cool because they had times from different places. How did you guys find out what the time was in those places?
We think it is cool how you study different places and like to make new friends!
PS Our teacher thinks this is a great idea and would like to do the same thing in our room!

I think this is a great idea.Learning about other places and the time is a fun and educational way to learn about other place.GOOD JOB!!

Lots of clocks!!! That’s way more clocks than I have in my whole house!
September 16th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I think it would be pretty awesome to learn what time it would be around the world. Also to study different maps, just like we do here.

Hi my name is Priya.I think your idea is really clever because the children will learn a lot about the time of the other countries and places and maybe ask more questions.

@Mrs. Yollis, Would you be able to post a photo of your clocks on your block once they are up? It would be interesting to see how they look.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
@Dylan, Are you sure about that? What if you counted the clocks on clock radios, watches, mp3 players, TVs, etc.? I think you might have more clocks than you realize!
September 20th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
mr toft,i think you should put a clock of where you were born
September 24th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
@Nathan Toft,
I will do that when I purchase them and put them up. Time seems to be something I am out of quite often! Maybe having more clocks in the room will give me more time? :-)
Thanks again for a great idea!
Sincerely,

@Mrs. Yollis, I know the feeling! I’d love to be able to tell you that four clocks have given me four times the amount of time but that wouldn’t be true!

Hello Mr. Toft. As you may already know I am part of Mrs. Benjamin’s 5th grade class in the U.S.A. I just wanted to say that was an excellent blog! And also there is a thing I do on my blog and it’s called The Question of the day. Everyday I post a question or riddle and I leave it up to you to find out the answer in a coment. The first person to get the answer correct, I will go on their blog and coment on it. You can get your whole class to do it. So get your thinking cap on!
