Making Sugar and Salt Crystals

Filed Under (00 Mr. Toft) by on 02-12-2009

A couple of students wanted to try this experiment at home as well as at school.  Here’s what you do:

Procedure:

  1. Fill a beaker 1/3 full with boiling water.
  2. Use 2 parts sugar for one part water. Pour sugar into water and stir until all sugar dissolves into a thick syrup.
  3. Drop in 3 drops food colouring
  4. Tie one end of a piece of string to the middle of a straw.
  5. Tie the other end to a clean paper clip.
  6. Wet the string and paper clip and brush with dry sugar so that sugar grains stick to string/clip.
  7. Place straw across rim of beaker so that the paper clip is suspended midway in the solution.
  8. Place beaker in a safe place. Do not disturb. You may cover lightly with a paper towel to keep out dust.

You may substitute salt for sugar. Use equal parts water and salt.
